Google Takes Legal Action Against App Developers for Deceptive Crypto Investment App Scheme

Google is taking legal action against two app developers for tricking people into downloading fake cryptocurrency apps and stealing their money. The accused individuals, Yunfeng Sun and Hongnam Cheung, are believed to be based in Shenzhen and Hong Kong. They allegedly uploaded around 87 bogus crypto apps to the Google Play Store since 2019, leading to over 100,000 users falling victim to their scam.

The tech giant says the apps promised high returns but didn’t deliver. When users tried to withdraw their money, the scammers asked for more fees, making it hard for victims to get their money back. This kind of scam is called “pig butchering,” but Google doesn’t like using that term.

In September 2023, the U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) warned about similar scams, which often involve criminal groups in Southeast Asia. They trick people into investing in fake cryptocurrency schemes by pretending to be someone else online.

Sun and Cheung used various tactics to lure victims, including sending text messages via Google Voice and promoting their apps on YouTube. They also used fake websites and mobile apps to make their scams seem real.

Google says the scammers kept changing their tactics to avoid getting caught. They violated Google’s rules and U.S. laws, including wire fraud and violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).

Google is suing to protect its users and its reputation. The company wants people to feel safe using its app store, and it’s not the first time they’ve taken legal action. In November 2023, Google sued people in India and Vietnam for spreading malware through fake versions of its chatbot.

This problem isn’t just with Android apps. Fake apps have also appeared on Apple’s App Store. Google is working hard to stop these scams and protect its users from fraud.
